We’ve Celebrated 100 Years In Adelaide!
In 2018, one of Adelaide’s oldest family owned jewellers, Archer & Holland and City Cross retailer, celebrated 100 years in business.
Current owners and third generation of the Holland family, Bill and Meredith Whiting have been running the jewellery business for over 25 years.
“Retail in Adelaide has had a tough time in terms of longevity. We feel proud and lucky that we’ve been able to succeed, not only as a family business but also having managed to build up our loyal client base,” Archer & Holland co-owner, Bill Whiting, explained.
Since 1918 Archer & Holland have had retail store presence on King William Street, Rundle Street, Gawler Place and James Place until it’s eventual move to City Cross where they are now located.
Herbert Archer and Herbert Holland established Archer & Holland which thrived for many years until the depression in the 1930s, when Herbert Holland bought out Herbert Archer’s share of the business.
Herbert Holland continued to run the business and was heavily involved in the Adelaide City Council as councillor in Hindmarsh Ward. He was instrumental in the development of both Pinky Flat and the fountain on the Torrens. He was also asked to run for Lord Mayor but ill health prevented it.
When Herbert died in 1957, Archer & Holland was taken over by his daughters until his grandson Bill and his wife Meredith bought the business in 1992.
Bill and Meredith have continued the family tradition and built a highly respected reputation across Adelaide for hand-crafting and manufacturing fine jewellery for over 40 years in store.
“As a family business, we are so pleased to celebrate this milestone year with our team and loyal customers. We couldn’t think of a better way to showcase our history and in such a significant place!”
City Cross is proud to be the destination for such a prestigious retailer, steeped in history and in its rightful place at the heart of the city.
